Collection: Bauer Brothers Pianos
The Julius Bauer Piano Company was established in 1857 in Chicago by Julius Bauer. Initially, the company started as a retailer of fine pianos and musical instruments but soon began manufacturing its own pianos under the “Julius Bauer” brand name. These pianos quickly became an instant success, celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship and high quality. The success of Julius Bauer pianos allowed the firm to open lavish warerooms in both Chicago and New York throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One notable retail location was inside the prestigious Crosby Opera House in Chicago, prior to its destruction in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
Julius Bauer pianos were known for their robust construction, elegant design, and rich, expressive sound. They featured innovative use of materials and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a durable and musically superior instrument. The company produced a range of pianos, including both upright and grand models, all of which were highly regarded by musicians and piano enthusiasts.
Due to financial difficulties associated with the Great Depression, the Julius Bauer Piano Company was bought out by the famous Rudolph Wurlitzer Piano Company in 1930. Wurlitzer continued to produce pianos under the Julius Bauer name until shortly before World War II. This acquisition allowed the Julius Bauer legacy to continue, albeit under new management, ensuring that the quality and craftsmanship associated with the Bauer name were preserved for a few more years.
Today, Julius Bauer pianos are highly valued by collectors and musicians for their historical significance and enduring quality. Many of these pianos have been restored over the years, maintaining their excellent musical capabilities. Restoration experts often find Julius Bauer pianos to be exceptionally well-made instruments that continue to offer rich, full sound and elegant design.
