Expert Piano Restringing: Reviving Century-Old Steinway Grands and Heirloom Pianos

Brigham Larson Pianos

One of my favorite things to do when guests come into the piano store is to invite them on a tour to go through the piano shop. Since not everyone around the nation can come in person to visit the piano shop, I want to share a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes process of piano restringing and the detailed restoration of family heirloom pianos. Our dedicated team, including expert piano technician Matthew, featured in this post and video, ensures that each piano we work on gets top-notch attention to detail.

A Century-Old Steinway Grand: The Restringing Process

We recently worked on an antique Steinway Grand, approximately 100 years old. Matthew meticulously prepped and restrung this piano, bringing it back to its former glory. One of the key aspects of our restoration process is our attention to aesthetic detail in addition to technical expertise, starting with polished hardware. Each screw and piece of hardware reflects the high standards we uphold in our work.

The soundboard on this piano has been refinished, and the plate repainted with top-quality automotive paint, ensuring durability and a pristine finish. This attention to detail is crucial in maintaining the piano's aesthetic appeal while enhancing its functionality.

Expert Craftsmanship

Another recently completed project, by Matthew, was a 1905 Steinway. Although it hasn't been cosmetically refinished yet, the internal restoration speaks volumes about the quality of our work. The soundboard was in dire condition, with many cracks. Matthew skillfully repaired it, restoring tension and strength to the board and restoring the powerful boom and sound quality to the piano.

Every pin in the piano has been torqued to perfection, ensuring optimal performance. We've also installed an all-new action, complete with new hammers and dampers. The result? An impressive power and sustain that promises to delight this Steinway piano owner.
