The Evaluation Process: What Makes a Piano Restoration Worth It?

During the call, I started by understanding the family’s intentions for the piano. This is a critical step because every restoration is tailored to the owner’s goals. Is the piano intended to be a fully restored heirloom passed down for generations, or is it simply meant to be refurbished for light use in its current state? Knowing the answer to this helps guide every recommendation I make.

This particular piano had “good bones,” meaning its soundboard, bridges, and tone were solid—a testament to its quality craftsmanship. However, the original components, including hammers, strings, and dampers, were well past their prime. While the piano could still be played, a full restoration would bring it back to its former glory, making it ready to serve as an enduring family treasure.

Custom Restoration Options for Every Need

I offer three levels of restoration for both the interior and exterior of a piano. These options allow families to choose the level of work that fits their vision and budget.

For the interior—the functional heart of the piano—restoration can include replacing worn hammers, restringing, and addressing other key mechanical components. For the exterior, refinishing can restore the beauty of the piano’s case, whether you’re looking for a vintage feel or a modern aesthetic.

If you have a family piano that’s been passed down through the years, I’d love to help you determine the best path forward.
