The Lux, Ricks, Campbell Family Piano!

Piano was the center of the home all of my childhood. It was often my mother's fingers dancing across the keys. One of my earliest memories was singing "A whole new world" at the piano with my mom. From hymns to Disney to Mozart to every emotion being pounded out on the keys. Music was expression, it connected is and distinguished us from each other. Each of my siblings had "their" song. The one that jumped off their fingers with the familiarity of an old friend. Mine was Pachelbel's Canon in D. And when it rang through the house, everyone knew whose fingers pressed the keys. Sometimes loud sometimes syrupy, sometimes rushed, like a story told for the hundredth time, each time a a little different from the last. I dont know what my life would've been without piano. But even today as adults with children of our own, when I see my sister she still says "come sing with" and together we sit at our grandmother's piano and pour our hearts out through our fingers and our lungs with laughter and tears and that moment of realizing that this is what "family" means to me. - Christina Lux My wife Karen is a mother of 7 children and married Ann artist who has 7 children. She has been involved in music all her life. Her family heirloom story... Karen's mom's Aunt Flo purchased her piano brand new. Karen's mom Beth lived with her Aunt Flo in Salt Lake for a while and learned to play on it. Aunt Flo didn't have any children, so she Willed the piano to Karen's mom. She obtained the piano after her Aunt Flo died in 1963. The family heirloom piano has only ever been in the family since Aunt Flo purchased it. After Karen passes away, her youngest daughter will be the lucky one in our family's next generation who will receive it. - Russell Ricks I have a deep love of pianos that all started with my grandma’s Conover. My grandma learned on this piano, my mom learned on this piano and then I learned on the very same piano. Throughout the years playing the piano has been my greatest source of peace and calm. I’m no concert pianist, but I’ve played since I was 3 years old. - Suz Campbell
It was my grandmother's, my mother has played it all her life. It is a precious family heirloom. -Christina Lux. The company is Conover Cable, out of Chicago. I would call the finish mahogany. The estimated year it was assembled is between 1895-1915. Karen contacted the company years ago to see if they had any records on the piano, but there was a fire in the office and the old records were destroyed. Because of the fire, the office guesstimated 1895-1915. - Russell Ricks. My great Aunt Flo (short for Florence) was childless and delightfully eccentric. She bought the piano brand new but never learned to play herself. My grandmother stayed the summer with her one year and took piano lessons and learned on it! My aunt then willed it to her and that’s how it came into my family. It’s a beautiful upright with gorgeous details. I have so many wonderful memories of Christmas’s and family get together, gathered around the piano. It was eventually passed down to my mom and actually passed to me at one time but we decided it should go back to my mom’s for a while longer. During the time it was at my house I taught my younger brother and sister on it as well. This piano means so much to me, I really don’t have the words. More than anything it feels like home. When I play it it feels like I’m home, at my grandma’s with all my family. -Suz Campbell
