The Hicken Family Piano!

I spent my childhood in California with the comforting presence of this piano in our living room. My sisters and I all learned how to play the piano on this instrument. This piano and I moved to Texas when I was 8 years old. Eventually, I got a degree in Piano Performance from BYU and am now a mother of 2 girls with a wonderful husband. We live in Pleasant Grove, and I currently sing in the Tabernacle Choir.
This 1885 vintage piano, cherished across three generations, has a rich history within my family. My grandmother acquired it from a neighbor, and removed the black paint to reveal its stunning natural wood underneath. It was then passed down to my mother and finally to me in 2016. This piano holds countless memories, including seeing my late mother play it, as well as many other family members. Since my mother's passing in 1998, this piano holds even greater significance. I found solace in this piano when I was 7 years old and attempted to recreate the hymn "How Great Thou Art," a tune that was played a few days prior at my mother's funeral. This piano has moved from multiple houses in California to multiple houses in Texas and to multiple houses in Utah. It's a priceless piece of family history, and we could never have left it behind. I learned how to play the piano on this instrument and went on to receive a degree in Piano Performance from BYU. As I prepare to teach my daughters, the 4th generation, to play, I hope to restore this beloved instrument, ensuring its legacy lives on.
