Virtue of the Month–Obedience
Obedience is the Virtue of the Month for April, and we had our teacher Sidsie Vaughn share some of her thoughts on the subject.
No one really likes being told what to do. Spending our time the way WE want to simply sounds much more appealing than doing what someone else wants us to do. But interestingly enough, obedience to God is the first principle of heaven. The elements obey Him. The world was formed and is fulfilling its purpose now because it does what its Maker commands it to do. But it’s much harder for us to humble ourselves and follow Him. Yet, we learn in Mosiah 3:19 that the natural man is an enemy to God. We learn that we will be happiest and one day live with our Father in Heaven if we will turn our will over to Him.
This is a big reason why piano has had such an impact on me. As a kid, I wasn’t the most obedient person. I would test my limits a little bit to defy my parents and see what consequences my disobedience would bring. I had a hard time with rules because I did not understand their purpose to protect and guide me, and ultimately help me fulfill my potential. Piano has been instrumental in changing my perception on obedience and my relationship with my loving Heavenly Father. Through the patience of practicing and doing what my piano teacher asked of me, I was able to learn true principles that will help me in my lifetime and in eternity. It helped me be more receptive to the Spirit, so that I would more fully be able to listen to and follow His promptings. Being obedient in my piano studies has helped me become better and continually helps me to become more submissive to God and happier.
