October Community Outreach Recital

Every three months, prior to our formal Piano Academy Recitals, we hold a “Community Outreach Recital” where some of our students perform at a local nursing home, rehabilitation center, or other community space. Why do we have an EXTRA recital, you ask? Well, these Community Outreach Recitals are special in a lot of ways!

In the New Testament (Matthew 25), Jesus taught a parable about a man who was leaving on a long trip. Before he left, he gave each of his servants some talents, or money. While their master was gone, two of the servants worked hard and each doubled the amount that they had been given. But one servant hid his talent in the ground. When the master came back from his trip, he praised the first two servants who had used their talents and gave them even more; but he took the one talent from the servant who had not done anything with it.

While the talents in the story were actually money, the Savior was teaching that He expects us to use the talents He gives us! This applies to all kinds of talents – spiritual, intellectual, physical, musical, you name it. We hope that the Community Outreach recitals help our students recognize that they are blessed when they use their talents.

Heavenly Father also expects us to use what He gives us to help others.  In the scriptures, we read, “For all have not every gift given unto them; for there are many gifts, and to every man is given a gift by the Spirit of God. To some is given one, and to some is given another, that all may be profited thereby.” (D&C 46:11-12) We as teachers want our students to realize that sharing their music can help others feel peace and joy that they might not otherwise get.

And, of course, performing is just FUN! Enjoy some pictures of our students and audience – thanks to Provo Rehabilitation and Nursing for letting us come!!
