Does your piano need a “Regulation?”

Posted by on Apr 27, 2017 in Products & services, Uncategorized | 0 comments

Does your piano need a “Regulation?”

For most pianists, the touch of a piano is just as important as the tone of the piano.  When a piano begins to lose is mechanical efficiency, it is said to have gone “out of regulation.” This means adjustments that were set at the factory no longer are accurate.   A regulation involves three systems in your piano: the action, trapwork, and the damper system.  A good regulation will put the action parts in the proper relationship with each other and the rest of the piano and the piano will operate at its maximum potential. Here’s a list of the many moving parts that occasionally need to be regulated. Tighten screws (reduce clicking, rattling, or buzzing noises coming from your piano, makes for smoother playing) Pedal Adjustment (helps make dampers more effective, makes your piano more responsive to pedal input) Aftertouch (nice solid, crisp, responsive feel to the keys, can help with sticking keys) Let-off (reduce mushy feel, maximize dynamic expression, eliminates double striking or hammers stifling the sound, most frequent cause of sticking keys) Damper Alignment & Lube (stop pesky notes that still ring after you let up on the sustain pedal) Key Dip (how far you can push the keys down, helps to smooth repeat playing) Key Spacing & Leveling (does your piano need braces? significantly improves appearance, can help with sticking keys) Hammer Blow Distance (distance from resting position to the strings, gives you more power) Action Height (facilitate smoother, quieter soft pedal operation) Key Height (how high the top of the keys are, gives you more power, quicker repeat playing) (list taken from enjoyyourpiano.com) If you are noticing sticky keys on your  piano, hammers double bouncing, keys not level, or an unevenness of touch and tone, call us at 801-701-0113 or schedule online and one of our piano technicians can give your piano an thourough evaluation!  We would love to help you get the touch of your piano feeling great again!  Or, if you are ready to upgrade or trade in your used piano to a new one, we offer many options.  We are Utah’s exclusive Hailun Piano Dealer!  #regulation #pianoregulation Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Like this:Like...

The Larson brothers, helping Dad move pianos

The Larson brothers make up a great moving crew to help out dad here and there for some extra moves.  They love to go with dad in the big truck on any move possible.  Usually we have our professional team of piano movers handle most of the piano moves, but occasionally, Brigham takes “his little crew” and big brother Ben who at 6’3″ isn’t so little anymore.  To meet our professional crew and learn more about our piano moving team and process, click HERE. Brigham Jr. in Dad’s Piano Shop

Posted by on Apr 17, 2017 in Brigham's Family, Misc | 0 comments

Brigham Jr. in Dad’s Piano Shop

Brigham Jr. is by far our most enthusiastic son to work in the piano shop with his dad.  This particular Saturday he pulled  his first action out of a piano to start working on it.  He is already a pro at cleaning and his power tool skills are coming along nicely.  Once he does a few prep items, he then passes the pianos off to the piano tech pros in “Dad’s piano shop”. From there, they take it through our refurbishing checklist to get the piano ready for sale.  Brigham Jr. does great work with a great attitude.  We love to be family owned and operated to create these remarkable experiences!   Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Like this:Like...

Brigham Saves the Day

Brigham Saves the Day

I went with Brigham on a late night piano appointment last week (called it date night) and captured this photo as he rescued a piano, as the third technician on the scene. (We get a lot of business from people calling Brigham to “fix” something that another technician started.) Here’s a beautiful review that we just received from a piano owner in Pleasant Grove that called us in tears…. “Brigham Larson SAVED THE DAY!!! We had an experience where we hired a different piano tuner to tune our piano and to fix the one key that wasn’t working. This different tuner stated our piano was in great condition and that the one key was a pretty easy fix as it had just come unglued. He started working on it but he had a hard time getting to the area he needed due to the design of our piano. He worked on it for a while and ended up taking the “action” out of the piano. This guy had about 30 years of experience and I thought it wouldn’t be an issue. After being at my house for almost three hours, I could tell he was getting really worried. He called a second guy who had a more technical background to come and help. They both came back the following day. Second guy stated that the action on the piano was in really bad shape and that it would take him about five hours to put the piano back together. He further stated that, even if he did put it back together, it may not work. Second guy actually said my best option would be to buy a new piano and my current one should just go to the dump. I was devastated! In less than 30 hours, my piano went to being in great condition (with the exception of one key) to where I was told I should take it to the dump! I called Brigham Larson Piano in tears and talked to one of the owners. Brigham Larson came to my house to take a look and see what damage had been done. He evaluated the condition and then put it back together, in working order, in about 2.5 hours. Although there is now damage to the action from the first guy, it is currently working. Brigham was kind, honest, professional, and obviously knew what he was doing. I have learned my lesson! I will never call another piano tuner again. Although the first guy had worked in this field for approximately 30 years, he clearly did not have the expertise that Brigham did. I highly recommend Brigham Larson! He will be the only one I will let work on any piano I own in the future!” Share this:Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Click to email this to a friend (Opens in new window)Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Like this:Like...
